When a company says they are “green,” what does that actually mean? In today’s world, sustainability can easily become a corporate buzzword. But at Posty Cards, we’ve always believed that true environmental stewardship requires proof, not just promises — and we’ve earned historic certification to back it up.
We don’t just print green designs—we operate a green business from the ground up.
That commitment reached a historic milestone when Posty Cards was officially certified as a platinum-level TRUE® Zero Waste facility. This achievement made us the very first printing facility in the United States—and the first company in our home state of Missouri—to earn the highest possible designation from the U.S. Green Building Council’s Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI®).
Here is a look behind the press at what it takes to achieve zero-waste history, and why it matters for your business.
What Does “TRUE Zero Waste Platinum” Actually Mean?
To achieve a TRUE Zero Waste certification, a facility must successfully divert more than 90% of its waste from landfills, incinerators, and the environment.
Reaching the Platinum level means going far beyond standard recycling bins. It required a comprehensive, top-to-bottom re-engineering of our production processes, purchasing habits, and everyday workflows. From our manufacturing plant floors to our breakrooms, every piece of material that enters our 45,000-square-foot Kansas City facility is evaluated through a circular lifecycle lens: Can we reduce it, reuse it, or recycle it?
A Holistic Approach to Sustainable Printing
Our zero-waste achievement is just one piece of a much larger sustainability puzzle that has been in our DNA since 1948. We operate with a simple philosophy: minimize our environmental impact so you can feel good about the personal mailings you send.
Our comprehensive green initiatives include:
- Powered by the Sun: Our facility features an array of 388 solar photovoltaic panels that generate more than 20% of our electrical needs. The remaining energy we use is 100% Green-e® certified renewable energy.
- Building for the Future: Our headquarters is LEED® Platinum certified—the highest tier awarded by the U.S. Green Building Council for energy-efficient building design. The plant utilizes extensive natural lighting, smart LED controls, and a high-efficiency HVAC system.
- Water Conservation: We catch rainwater in an 8,300-gallon reclamation tank to flush toilets and irrigate our two acres of native plant landscaping and rain gardens.
- Responsible Production: Every single card and calendar we manufacture is printed using eco-friendly, soy-based inks on responsibly sourced FSC®-certified paper.
